The Biomedical Sciences Mental Health and Wellness Committee is a group of students, faculty, and staff dedicated to enhancing the mental health and well-being of our graduate student body. Our mission is to create a supportive and inclusive environment that recognizes the unique challenges faced by graduate students. By providing resources, raising awareness, and organizing events that address mental health issues, we hope to make mental health and wellness a priority amongst our community. Through these collaborative efforts, we endeavor to foster a culture of empathy, resilience, and self-care, ensuring that every graduate student can achieve their academic and personal aspirations while maintaining their mental health.

A message from the BMS Mental Health and Wellness Committee founder, Stefanie Hodapp.

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of mental health and well-being, particularly within the academic sphere. As a graduate student, I have encountered the often-overlooked struggles of stress, anxiety, and depression. The demanding nature of research, coupled with the pressure to excel, created an environment where mental health concerns were frequently neglected. I found myself grappling with the weight of expectations, feeling isolated, and questioning my ability to cope.

It was through this experience that I realized the need for a support system that understood the unique stressors faced by graduate students, inspiring the BMS Mental Health and Wellness Committee. Our committee aims to foster an environment where individuals can openly discuss their mental health, access necessary resources, and feel supported in their academic and personal journeys. It is our sincere hope that this committee serves as a source of strength, understanding, and resilience for all members of our BMS family.
