Research Interests:

Mechanisms of monocyte recruitment and activation in inflammation. Molecular and biochemical approaches are used to study chemokine receptors, G proteins and the integration of signaling pathways that are necessary for monocyte activation and maturation (chemokines, cytokines and growth factors). Cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of death and illness in developed countries, is an inflammatory disease and various transgenic mouse models provide the basis to study the role of innate immunity in disease initiation and progression. Mature monocytes/macrophages play a pivotal role in atherogenesis and specific projects include the identification, cloning and characterization of macrophage pattern recognition receptors that are important in the removal of pathogens such as damaged lipoproteins.
