Research Interests:

The research in my laboratory is directed at understanding the relationship between growth and development of the human endocrine pancreas, with the ultimate goal of developing a cell transplantation therapy for diabetes. We have created immortalized human pancreatic endocrine cell lines that can be induced to differentiate into functional beta cells exhibiting glucose-responsive insulin secretion in vitro and in vivo. Currently, we are studying the cell lines at a basic and applied level so that it will be possible to move into large animal models as soon as possible.
