Professor of Pharmacology

Research Interests:

We are investigating three related areas of biomedical science. First, we are studying the control of animal cell proliferation and differentiation. We focus on the biology of liver regeneration (humoral control by growth factors and inhibitors, regulation by cell cycle proteins and proto-oncogenes). We are also investigating new kinds of stem cells with unusual properties of immune privilege. Second, we are interested in environmental mechanisms of chemical hepatocarcinogenesis: carcinogen chemistry, stem cells, oncogenes, carcinogen targeting, heavy metals. Third, we are studying gene expression: microsatellites, gene transfer, gene targeting, unusual DNA structure. Primary hepatocyte cultures and progenitor cell lines are used to explore these different avenues of research.
