Molecular virology of HIV-1 replication, emphasizing the function of the Nef protein. Nef is an important virulence factor for primate immunodeficiency viruses. Molecular and cellular biological techniques are being used to understand how Nef affects intracellular protein trafficking, a function which we hypothesize underlies its effects upon viral replication, cellular receptor modulation, and signal transduction.
