Research Interests:

Our research is focused on how cell behavior is directed by the extracellular matrix (ECM), a 3-dimensional fibrillar scaffold to which cells adhere. Our investigations revolve around how the mechanical and biochemical properties of this 3D ECM direct 1) the differentiation of human mesenchymal and embryonic stem cells into specific cell types, 2) development and patterning of the heart, 3) adhesion strenght of cells. Relevant to all projects is the spatial and temporal display of these extracellular signals to the cells, and to achieve this, our laboratory attempts to mimic ECM changes that occur in vivo using novel biological and synthetic polymer systems in vitro. Therapeutic use of these research areas include cell-based regeneration of heart muscle post-heart attack and treatment of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
