Research Interests:
Dr. Carethers' laboratory is focused on the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer, including hereditary polyposis syndromes. Projects in the lab include: (1) identifying germline mutations in hamartomatous polyposis syndromes; (2) understanding gene inactivation and pathways involved in colon cancer formation, including that of the phosphatase PTEN and TGF beta signal transduction; (3) Understanding the clinical consequences of inactivation of DNA mismatch repair and microsatellite instability. Our laboratory bridges basic science and clinical science, and utilizes resected patient tumors and cell lines.
