Professor of Medicine
Ph.D., University of Kansas
Research Interests:

Our research interests are in the area of liver disease pathogenesis associated with Hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C virus infections. Both viruses, although different from each other, cause chronic hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma. HCV, is an RNA virus, translates via an IRES mechanism and replicates its RNA on the ER, causing and ER stress response. This leads to oxidative stress and activation of cellular kinases leading to activation of STAT-3 and NF-kB. Current focus of our research include; mechanisms of HBx in liver oncogenesis, HCV RNA translation/replication, cell signaling, oxidative stress, steatosis (fatty liver/alteration of lipid metabolism), angiogenesis.
